Why go?

The South African Open was first played in 1903 and is one of the oldest national opens in golf. Gary Player won it a record 13 times. The 2027 edition is part of The Open Qualifying Series, with three places at The 155th Open at St Andrews going to leading players who are not already exempt.

It returns to Stellenbosch Golf Club, the fourth-oldest club in the Cape, for a second year running. When the club hosted in 2026, Casey Jarvis won and spectator tickets sold out before the first round. Before that, its only SA Open was in 1999, won by local hero David Frost, who grew up at the club.

Early March is harvest time in the Winelands. You can spend the morning at the tournament and the afternoon over lunch at a wine estate, which is hard to beat as a golf week.
